They all have dreams of getting into a World Cup Squad but some freak injury for their club side or, even worse, when training, would rule them out for a few weeks to some months. There are many crucial players who missed World Cup due to injuries and the over cautiousness in the pre-cup games wouldn't help as it would effect their performance and they might not make it to the squad
Some big players have missed World Cups, for instance Beckham and Rooney missed one each for England, Ballack for Germany, Canizares for Spain, Essien for Ghana, Di Stefano for Argentina and even Pele missed a few games

Let's look at some players who missed the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup due to injuries

Out of the players above, only Falcao has been selected in the squad and is set to get on plane to Brazil, but we'll have to wait and see if he made a dramatic recovery
Apart from these, star players Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar have been ruled out of some games just weeks before the tourney. While Ronaldo made a recovery and getting ready for the Champions League final, Neymar, the poster boy of the tournament, has been ruled out of the Barcelona end season but is hopeful of making it just in time
It won't be the last injury we might face as is the case of Thiago Alacantara, who was injured a couple of months ago, recovered and has been named in Spain's 30-man squad but only for the injury to resurface again

Update May 17:
Neymar is back to playing in the final third of Barca's final La Liga game against Atletico
C Ronaldo was named in the squad for the game against Espanyol but was replaced by Isco in the last minute
Diego Costa was subbed when he faced a relapse of his hamstring in the match where Atletico held Barca to win La Liga
Germany's captain Philip Lahm limped out of German Cup final due to a shin problem but is expected to make a complete recovery to be fit by Wednesday, as would be Bastian Schweinsteiger and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer

Update May 18:
French backup goalkeeper Steve Mandanda suffered a cracked vertebra and is out of the World Cup
